Julia Magdalene Rómas
Works On Paper
Julia Magdalene Romas (DE/PL) lives and works in Berlin, Germany. Her work includes paintings, sculpture, sounds, poetry and body movements in the sense of performance art. The theoretical research work "My I Oni" (We and The Other) deals with the research on the image of the stranger in the symbolism of Slavic myths, rituals and handcrafts using the example of the Herody, based on a photography showing the polish tradition of "Herody", taken by Jozef Bacior (PL, 1949). In her multi-faced art practice she seeks and shifts boundaries between the 'I am', 'We' and the 'Other'.
"The uniqueness of the other, which cannot be explained in the medium of language, the unfathomable strangeness between the I and the Other that arises at the moment of an encounter: a face that cannot be seen, it is not a content that is created by our thinking I transform this encounter into my paintings, sculptures, music, language and performances, which are created in addition to the research work 'My I Oni' (We and the Others). The research work examines questions of identity, inclusion and exclusion based on the scientific work of the so-called “Herody”, Polish Christmas singers from originally pre-Christian times, but also based on personal reflections. My multimedia artistic practice serves as a mediator between one's own and what appears foreign and tries to visualize these boundaries, to postpone, to dissolve. Only when I recognize what lies behind the masks and begin to perceive and explore the self through art, to illuminate the foreignness in me, the artistic depth begins: a cycle of growth and decomposition.
